Abstract

Ecocriticism is the theoretical disposition that enables to understand the portrayal of the physical environment in the literary studies. The predominance of the natural world in relation to aboriginal tradition forms the core of the novel Whispering in Shadows. Deep ecology is employed to highlight the Okanagan aboriginal world and its proximity to the characters in the novel. Indigenous knowledge along with the education enables the protagonist of the novel to fight against intense environmental degradation. Anthropocentric attitude is the root cause of the ecological problems. Pollution, logging and globalization are the end products of industrialization which results in damaging the ecosphere. Jeannette Armstrong holds up the native views which are inclusive of natural world as remedial for the global environmental crisis.
