A Look into Hijam Anganghal’s Ibemma

  • Dr Gurumayum Bijoykumar Sharma Assistant Professor Manipuri Department Imphal College, Imphal Imphal, Manipur, India

Abstract

Looking into his major works, it is evident that he widely explored the lives of women, their conditions, roles and also their status in the Manipuri society. In the context of exposing and reproducing women’s issues, Anganghal brings up an argument on the popular belief that disregard of religious rules will eventually result to unburnt body when cremated, thus analysing religious truth from an altogether different perspective. It is obvious that Anganghal was an intellectual who was much ahead of his time (1939) for he examined and analysed the social customs and traditions in a very revolutionary manner much earlier.
